Take the road less travelled
This phrase is normally assigned to people who have had the initiative and the willingness to change the way things will being done at the time. This applies to all spheres of life including manufacturing and the way we do business. The idea has always been to produce goods and services in massive volumes and as cheap as possible. Dare I say that the motivation for this change in the manufacturing environment and in the way we do business is simply to increase the bottom line. This has obviously got to do with capitalism and in the way we accumulate wealth.
A new phase or slogan that has been making it’s rounds is called the Fourth Industrial Revolution or The Digital Era and immediately one tends to think of computers. What exactly is the fourth Industrial Revolution or the new digital era and how is it going to affect you and me and the rest of the world. How we think and how we implement new systems that will satisfy the demands of the modern world, will depend on our ability to produce more products that are more efficient in all spheres of life. Let’s call a spade a spade, and only reason why we are in business is to make a profit
In order to understand this new phenomenon that is taking place,we may have may have to go back to the First Industrial revolution.
The invention of the wheel and the steam engine in the 18th century, changed the way people used to manufacture goods and services completely These new inventions forced people to think differently and created a complete new way of doing things It also change the way people were manufacturing certain items which were labor-intensive and as a result more products produced which obviously increased revenues and change the lifestyles of people.
The second industrial revolution was the invention of electricity. This further increased output in all manufacturing fields.
The third industrial revolution was the invention of computers. This further increased all spheres of manufacturing, the banking industry and the way we communicated with one another.
Now we are in what is referred to this the fourth Industrial Revolution or the digital age. The invention of artificial intelligence [AI], robots, the Internet and other technologies, some of which nobody in the 18th centuary believed was possible.
What comes to mind when you have a look at the progress and changes that were made in all the different so-called industrial revolutions, is that there was and still is certain sectors of society that were and are resistant to change. That people will lose their jobs and livelihoods because of these new inventions. In fact, although there were certain industries that were replaced, new industries came to life and people had to learn new skills, which they obviously did, and everybody had a income which satisfied the financial needs and lifestyles of people. On the contrary more people were employed as a result of more goods and services produced.
Now without going into details of the changes that did take place, which you obviously know, what is it that we have to do today to keep up with changes that will satisfy the demands of society? I called it the age of the microwave. We want everything Now!! Everything needs to be produced quickly, efficiently and as cheap as possible. People are not willing to wait but rather wanted now.
In a 2016 article, Schwab wrote that “like the revolutions that preceded it, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has the potential to raise global income levels and improve the quality of life for populations around the world.”
He continued: “In the future, technological innovation will also lead to a supply-side miracle, with long-term gains in efficiency and productivity. Transportation and communication costs will drop, logistics and global supply chains will become more effective, and the cost of trade will diminish, all of which will open new markets and drive economic growth.”
It is obvious in order to meet the demands of so-called you concerns consumer requirements we also have to become cost effective for introducing other goods and services. Cost is for cost effective means that we have to use or eliminate all unnecessary expenses in order for us to become profitable more goods and services need to be produced and prices to be very competitive.
